Upon learning of the recent postponement of Dubuque’s annual suicide prevention/awareness walk, I have once again been reminded that suicide is real and exists in our communities. We need more awareness and prevention efforts, not less.
Toward that end, I’d like to recommend the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Center website and Western Mass’s Alternatives to Suicide group. These are excellent resources for confronting suicidal thinking and the myths about it. The Alternatives to Suicide group challenges the myth that it is too dangerous to offer peer-to-peer support groups focused on the topic of suicide without a clinician present. Instead the group reports “…as a community we have found strength in coming together to talk about many 'taboo' topics and to support one another in our times of greatest distress.
